Who is Siri?
Siri is the personal assistant on Apple iPhone and iPad. Users can just talk to Siri to get things done. For many topics, Siri understands pretty much anything spoken. “Play some nice soul music”, “What’s the weather like tomorrow?” and “Wake me up tomorrow at seven” are some typical things you may say to Siri. With a growing number of knowledge domains, like movies, sports and local businesses, the amount of questions and commands understood by Siri is virtually endless.
Natural language processing
The greatest thing of Siri is that you don’t have to learn any commands. It doesn’t matter if you ask “Can you please set an alarm for me?”, or command “Set an alarm for six o’clock”.
Interpreting a wide array of phrases is called natural language processing. In 2013 I worked mainly on that part, as a contractor, in Cupertino, California. In the fall of 2014 till early 2015 I continued with the project in Paris. Software engineering projects are not typical for me. However, my work will directly influence the user experience of millions of people, so I feel lucky to have been part of the team that makes Siri the best natural language agent on the market.
